Approximately 90 percent of all families are ice cream fans, making this seasonal sweet an absolute must during the summer\u2019s hottest days. But while it may taste good, it can take a toll on your teeth, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because it\u2019s made of dairy, ice cream does contain calcium, which is great for your teeth and bones, but it is also packed with sugar, which in addition to affecting your waistline, can contribute to cavities<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How To (Safely) Indulge<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If you are one of the myriad fans of this sweet treat, you may want to know how to enjoy it without putting your health at risk. While an occasional cone won\u2019t do too much damage, if you do indulge, look for sugar free or low sugar options to keep your teeth safe. Furthermore, avoid flavors with pieces of gum or chewy candy in them, as these can stick to braces and dentures or even loosen restorations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Be sure to eat your regular meal first before devouring your dessert, so you don\u2019t go overboard and fill up with sugar and brush your teeth and floss after you\u2019re done so that your teeth and gums are free of cavity-causing bacteria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you have sensitive teeth, eating cold foods like ice cream can sometimes hurt. Be sure to use a sensitive toothpaste that will help block the sensation of pain from the cold to your tooth\u2019s nerves.
