4 Treatments Using Dental Crowns That Could Save Your Smile

May 18, 2018

Relaxed woman receiving dental treatmentA good dentist and dentistry team will partner with you to keep your smile healthy, but even those patients with the best dental health care routines can experience decay and damage. Luckily, your dentist can often provide conservative, effective restoration options, using custom crafted dental crowns to repair damaged teeth. Dental crowns are restorations that fit completely over the top of a damaged tooth to repair your flawless smile. In this post, we’ll explain how dental crowns can be used to repair or enhance your smile.

1 – Repair Decay & Damage

The most obvious use of dental crowns is to repair damaged or decayed teeth to full form and function. They can also be used to replace damaged or lost fillings if the tooth is badly damaged.

2 – Protect Root Canal Treated Teeth

Following a root canal, we may need to place a dental crown to protect the treated tooth. These procedures require us to remove the inner pulp structure of the tooth. Even though we replace the lost structure, the integrity of the tooth is weakened following root canal, and placing a dental crown strengthens and protects what healthy dental structure remains.

3 – Replace Missing Teeth

Following the loss of one or a few consecutive missing teeth, a dental crown supported fixed bridge or a dental implant crown or bridge may be necessary. A traditional fixed bridge is crafted by fusing dental crowns, one on each side, to a replacement tooth or teeth. The crowns are then attached to surrounding healthy teeth to support the restoration. One or more dental implants can also be used to support a single tooth dental crown restoration or a fixed bridge prosthetic to replace several teeth in a row.

4 – Complete a Smile Makeover Plan

When patients are transforming cosmetically flawed teeth, one or more dental crowns may be used to complete the smile makeover plan. All-ceramic crowns look, feel, and function just like a healthy tooth, and because the porcelain is stain resistant, your new smile will look great for years to come.
